Article 4: What is a cookie? What is a tracker?

Cookies are small text files that are automatically stored on your device (computer, tablet, smartphone) when you visit websites. They are stored by your browser.

More broadly speaking, any technical process that involves reading or writing information to a user’s device—that is, the hardware the user uses to connect (smartphone, tablet, computer, etc.) is referred to as a tracker . Thus, fingerprinting—which involves cross-referencing the IP address, technical characteristics of the device, and browser to identify a unique visitor—constitutes a form of tracking, even though it does not necessarily involve the placement of cookies.

Article 5: What are the main categories of cookies and trackers? Do they all require your consent?

Cookies or trackers are generally categorized as either “system” or “analytical.” “System” or essential cookies refer to those that are necessary for websites to function properly.   They facilitate access, help ensure smooth navigation, and enable you to access all desired features. Without them, websites would not function properly, and your browsing experience would not be as smooth. For example, they allow the website to identify the browser you are using in order to optimize the display of the site. Due to their nature, the placement of this type of cookie or tracker does not require your consent.

"Analytical" cookies, on the other hand, refer to cookies that are not strictly necessary for the functioning of websites but that enable certain analyses of website usage, particularly regarding traffic. This applies to audience measurement cookies, cookies related to targeted advertising, and so-called social media tracking cookies generated by social media sharing buttons. Unlike “system” cookies, “analytical” cookies can, in principle, only be placed on your device with your consent.

There are, however, certain exceptions to this requirement to obtain consent. This is particularly the case for cookies used to obtain user consent, or for cookies or trackers used solely to measure the website’s or application’s audience, to address various needs  (performance measurement, detection of navigation issues, optimization of technical performance or usability, estimation of required server capacity, analysis of viewed content, etc.), and are strictly necessary for the functioning and routine administration of this website or application.

Section 6: What types of cookies and trackers do we use?

The websites www.deroudilleavocat.com and www.legischool.com use several types of trackers or cookies that fall into the categories mentioned above.

All cookies and trackers stored on your device, or that collect information about it from the websites www.deroudilleavocat.com and www.legischool.com, are managed by Squarespace, the website’s host, which also provided the tool used to build the site.

Section 7: What information do we collect using these cookies or trackers?

The “analytical” cookies we use—which can only be stored on your device with your consent (see below)—allow us to collect certain general information about website navigation, such as Google search keywords associated with visits to the site and terms searched for in the site’s “search” tabs. This information is completely anonymous and is not linked to any IP address.

When you visit the websites www.deroudilleavocat.com and www.legischool.com, the website server also records your IP address, the times of your visits, the type of device you are using to access the site, the browser you are using, the website from which you arrived, and the pages of the site you have viewed. This information is used to populate the site’s “activity log.” It is retained for only 6 days.

Section 8: For what purposes do we collect this data through cookies or trackers?

The websites www.deroudilleavocat.com and www.legischool.com collect and process data via cookies solely for the purpose of audience measurement (tracking unique visitors, measuring performance, analyzing viewed content, and identifying navigation issues).

Section 9: How long are cookies stored on your device?

The CNIL recommends that cookies stored in your browser have a lifespan limited to 13 months from the time they are first stored in your browser (for "analytical" cookies, from the time you consent to their storage by clicking "I agree" in the cookie pop-up window).

Unfortunately, Squarespace does not yet allow you to set the lifespan of its "analytical" cookies,   so some of them may remain on your device’s browser for two years (24 months) after being placed, as described above (see cookie lifespan table), unless you “clear” your browser.

Of course, these are only “analytical” cookies, which you have already consented to by clicking “I agree” in the cookie pop-up window. As noted above, “system” cookies have a maximum lifespan of 30 minutes.

If you do not want the cookies mentioned above to remain on your device for that long, we recommend that you regularly "clear" your browser to remove all cookies that have been stored there.

The procedure for this operation varies depending on the browser you are using (see below).

Article 10: What should you do if you wish to object to cookies or trackers, or withdraw your consent?

With the exception of “system” cookies and cookies used to identify site connections, the placement of cookies on your device is subject to your consent, which you provide by clicking “I agree” in the cookie pop-up window. Therefore, if you choose not to do so, no “analytical” cookies will be placed on your device.

Although this cannot, under any circumstances, be considered an expression of your consent, your browser settings may allow you to generally block the use of all types of cookies (and therefore potentially “system” cookies as well), including “system” cookies. Please note, however, that disabling this category of cookies may impair the proper functioning of the website. Your browser settings also allow you to withdraw your consent to the placement of “analytical” cookies on your device at any time by clearing your browser cache. Indeed, even after giving your consent, you always have the right to withdraw it at any time.

To exercise your choice, you can visit the following pages, depending on the browser you use:
